What It Is

The Church of Hosios David is a late 5th-century Byzantine church in Thessaloniki, originally the katholikon of the Latomou Monastery. Travellers visit to examine its early Christian and Byzantine art, specifically the original 5th-century apse mosaic depicting Christ, alongside wall frescoes dating from the 12th to 14th centuries.

Getting There

From the city centre, the uphill walk to the Upper Town (Ano Poli) takes approximately 20 to 25 minutes along winding streets. Alternatively, municipal buses run from central areas to the upper district, followed by a brief walk through pedestrian alleys.

Time to Allow

Plan to spend 20 to 30 minutes. The building is compact, allowing adequate time to view the apse mosaic and remaining wall paintings.

When to Go

Visit during daylight hours when natural light illuminates the interior art. It does not typically get crowded, but the small interior means even small tour groups can fill the space. In summer, visit early or late in the day to avoid walking uphill in the heat.
