Overview

Fort York is an early 19th-century military fort that once guarded the entrance to Toronto's harbour. Eight historic structures remain on the grounds, including blockhouses and earthworks. Travellers visit to see these preserved military buildings and learn about the city's early defensive history.

Getting There

From downtown Toronto, streetcars reach the site in roughly 15 to 20 minutes. Walking directly from the city centre takes approximately 25 to 30 minutes.

Time to Allow

Allow 1.5 to 2 hours to walk the grounds, enter the historic buildings, and read the interpretive displays.

When to Visit

Late spring to early autumn offers the most comfortable weather for walking outside. Weekends and special events draw the most crowds, while weekday mornings are quiet. Winters are cold and exposed to lake winds.
