Caballo Muerto

Located in the Moche Valley of northern Peru, this archaeological site of Caballo Muerto consists of a cluster of earthen mound ruins. These structures were built over an extended period, providing a physical record of an ancient civilization. Visitors go here to examine the architectural traces and the layout of these prehistoric mounds in a desert setting.

Getting There

The site is located outside the city center of Trujillo. The most common way to reach the ruins is by hiring a taxi or renting a vehicle. The drive from the city center typically takes around 30 to 45 minutes, depending on traffic and road conditions.

Visit Duration

Allow approximately 2 to 3 hours to walk through the site and observe the various mounds and archaeological remains.

When to Visit

It is advisable to visit during the early morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday heat of the coastal desert. The region is generally dry, but visiting during the cooler months is more comfortable. The site typically does not experience the same level of crowding as the more central urban attractions.
