Overview

The Stones of Mora mark the historic assembly site in Knivsta, near Uppsala, where medieval Swedish kings were elected and proclaimed. While the original stones were relocated in the 15th century and the full monument lost over time, a sheltered building now protects the remaining stone fragments bearing election inscriptions. Travellers interested in Scandinavian history visit to see these physical records of early Swedish governance.

Getting There

Located southeast of central Uppsala, the site is reachable by car in roughly 15 to 20 minutes via the E4 highway or local roads. Regional buses from Uppsala Central Station travel toward the Knivsta area in approximately 25 minutes, followed by a short walk along the rural road.

Time to Allow

Plan for 20 to 30 minutes on site. The location is compact, consisting of a single small enclosure housing the inscribed fragments alongside informational signs.

When to Go

Visit during daylight hours, ideally between spring and autumn when rural footpaths and grounds are easy to navigate. The area is in open countryside and rarely sees crowds, making for an unhurried stop year-round.

Nearby Combinations

Because the stop is brief, it is best paired with other points of interest in the surrounding area:

  • Linnaeus Hammarby (2.2km)
  • Danmark Church (4.4km)
  • Fyris (7.1km)
  • Ultuna (7.2km)
