Getting Around Ushuaia

Ushuaia sits between the mountains and the Beagle Channel. Walking works well along downtown's Avenida San Martín and the waterfront. However, moving inland involves steep streets and steps that turn slick in rain or snow.

Taxis and remises (radio cars) are the best option for traveling uphill, reaching Martial Glacier, or carrying bags. For Tierra del Fuego National Park, tourist minibuses departing from Avenida Maipú near the port are the standard choice for non-drivers.

Transit Passes and Payment

City buses use Argentina's SUBE card. Cards must be bought and loaded before boarding, as drivers reject cash. Because routes serve residential suburbs rather than hiking hubs, obtaining a card is rarely worthwhile for short visits. Minibuses and taxis take cash or cards directly.

Airport to City Center

Ushuaia Airport (USH) is five kilometers south of downtown on a peninsula:

• Taxis and remises: Minimal effort, low-to-moderate cost band, taking 10–15 minutes from the terminal curb.
• Pre-booked transfers: Moderate cost band, zero effort, practical for groups with bulky expedition gear.
• Public buses: Local city buses do not enter the airport.

Practical Transit Notes

• Luggage: Dragging rolling bags uphill is grueling on gravel and steep sidewalks; use a taxi if staying above the core.
• Peak hours: Cabs see high demand during cruise turnover days and bad storms. Pre-arrange airport rides.
• Accessibility: Steep topography and winter ice severely limit wheelchair movement off central waterfront blocks.
