Local Transport in Vaduz
Vaduz is a compact capital where the scale of the city dictates the mode of transport. Because the central district is small, walking is the most efficient way to visit the Vaduz Castle, the government buildings, and the city center.
Transport Modes
- Walking: Best for sightseeing within the town center. Most major landmarks are reachable on foot.
- LIBus (Public Bus): The primary network for traveling to the outskirts or other municipalities. It is the best option for those visiting the Rhine valley areas.
- Taxis: Available for direct point-to-point trips, particularly useful for those with heavy luggage or limited mobility.
Tickets and Passes
For short stays, individual tickets for the LIBus are sufficient. For visitors staying longer or traveling across the country, a day pass is more economical. These do not suit travelers who intend to stay strictly within the pedestrian-friendly center of Vaduz.
From Zurich Airport (ZRH) to Vaduz
As Liechtenstein has no airport, visitors arrive via Zurich. The journey involves a combination of train and bus.
- Train and Bus: Take a train from Zurich Airport to Sargans or Buchs. From there, transfer to a LIBus heading to Vaduz. This is the standard route, balancing cost and reliability.
- Private Transfer/Rental Car: A direct drive from the airport. This reduces transfer effort and time but increases the cost band significantly.
Practical Notes
- Rush Hours: Expect increased bus congestion during morning and evening commutes on the main roads connecting Vaduz to neighboring towns.
- Last Services: Bus frequencies decrease significantly late at night and on Sundays. Check the LIBus schedule for the final departures to avoid reliance on taxis.
- Accessibility: Most public buses are equipped for accessibility, and the city center is generally pedestrian-friendly.
- Luggage: Buses have limited space for oversized luggage; taxis are recommended for arrivals with multiple large suitcases.
