Lulu Island
Overview
Lulu Island is a large river delta island situated at the mouth of the Fraser River, directly south of Vancouver. Most of the land is occupied by the city of Richmond. Travelers visit primarily for walking, cycling, or driving along the waterfront dikes, where the river channels meet the surrounding urban landscape.
Getting There
From downtown Vancouver, you can take the SkyTrain Canada Line directly south to Richmond–Brighouse Station, which takes approximately 25 to 30 minutes. Driving from the city center via Oak Street or Granville Street takes roughly 30 to 45 minutes, depending on bridge traffic across the North Arm of the Fraser River.
Recommended Duration
Plan to spend between 2 and 4 hours. This provides sufficient time for a stroll or bike ride along the perimeter paths and a brief visit to the local waterfront areas.
When to Visit
Late spring through early autumn offers the mildest and driest conditions for outdoor activities along the water. Clear afternoons provide the best visibility. The main riverfront paths and nearby commercial hubs tend to be busy on sunny weekend afternoons, so weekday mornings or early evenings are better for avoiding crowds.
Nearby Combinations
A visit can be paired with several points of interest in the vicinity:
- Minoru Park (4 km): A public community park in Richmond with walking trails, lakes, and sports facilities.
- Mitchell Island (4.6 km): An industrial island situated in the North Arm of the Fraser River between Vancouver and Richmond.
- Punjabi Market (7.3 km): A commercial and cultural district in South Vancouver featuring South Asian shops and food.
- Champlain Heights (7.4 km): A residential area in southeast Vancouver with quiet neighborhood walking paths.
