Primary Modes of Transport

Vancouver's transit system, managed by TransLink, is integrated across several modes:

• SkyTrain: The automated rapid transit system. The Canada Line connects the airport to downtown, while the Expo Line and Millennium Line serve the city center, Burnaby, and Surrey. It is the fastest option for long distances.
• Bus: Extensive coverage for areas not reached by rail. RapidBus lines provide faster cross-town connections with fewer stops.
• SeaBus: A passenger-only ferry connecting Waterfront Station in downtown Vancouver to Lonsdale Quay in North Vancouver.

Payment and Passes

The Compass Card is the standard reloadable fare card. It offers discounted fares compared to single-trip cash payments. For short-term visitors, a Compass Ticket is available for single use. Contactless payment (credit/debit cards) is also accepted on most services. A monthly pass is only suitable for long-term residents or those commuting daily across multiple zones.

From Vancouver International Airport (YVR) to City Center

The Canada Line (SkyTrain) is the primary link to downtown. It is the fastest option and operates on a dedicated track, avoiding road traffic. Taxis and ride-share services provide door-to-door convenience but are subject to highway congestion and higher cost bands. Public buses are available but are not recommended for airport-to-city transfers due to travel time and luggage constraints.

Practical Transit Notes

• Rush Hours: Expect heavy congestion on the Expo Line and major bus corridors during weekday morning and evening peaks.
• Luggage: SkyTrain stations are equipped with elevators and escalators, making them accessible for travelers with suitcases.
• Accessibility: The entire SkyTrain network and the majority of the bus fleet are fully accessible for wheelchairs and strollers.
• Last Services: While the SkyTrain runs late, frequency drops significantly after midnight. Always check the TransLink schedule for the final departure to your specific destination.
