Vache Island

Overview

Vache Island is a small granite islet situated off the western coast of Mahé. Characterized by sparse vegetation and rocky terrain, it serves as a breeding ground for various seabirds. Visitors travel here primarily for birdwatching from the water and to observe the "Les Trois Dames" rock formations located nearby.

Getting There

From central Victoria, travel across Mahé to the western coast by road, which typically takes 30 to 45 minutes. Reaching the waters around the islet requires arranging a local boat charter or excursion from the shore.

Recommended Visit Duration

Allow 1 to 2 hours for a boat circuit around the islet to observe nesting birds and coastal rock formations.

When to Visit

Visit during periods of calm seas, preferably in the morning when swell and winds are generally lower. Rough waves frequently obscure the nearby rocks and make approaching the area difficult. The site does not get crowded due to its offshore location and limited access.

Nearby Attractions

A visit here can be combined with other sites on western and central Mahé:

  • Morne Blanc (3.7km)
  • Thérèse Island (4.1km)
  • Morne Seychellois National Park (4.3km)
  • Morne Seychellois (4.4km)
