Astronomical Observatory of Vilnius University

Established in 1753, this facility is one of the oldest observatories in Europe. It is located within the campus of Vilnius University. Visitors go here to see the historic architecture and the old observation equipment. While modern city light pollution limits current stargazing capabilities, the site remains an active research institution and a museum of astronomical history.

Getting There

The observatory is located in the heart of the Old Town. It is accessible by foot from the city centre, typically taking less than 10 minutes to reach depending on your starting point.

Duration of Visit

Allow approximately 1 to 2 hours to explore the buildings and the exhibition of scientific instruments.

When to Visit

The site is best visited during standard daylight hours to view the architecture and interior exhibits. It does not typically experience the extreme crowding found at the main city squares, though guided tours may be limited in number.
