Warsaw Zoo

Overview

Opened in 1928 on the eastern bank of the Vistula River, this city zoo houses around 11,000 animals across more than 500 species. Travelers visit to see a diverse collection of wildlife in both open-air habitats and dedicated indoor pavilions.

Getting There

From central Warsaw, cross the river using public transit. Trams and buses run regularly to stops adjacent to the grounds in the Praga district, taking roughly 15 to 25 minutes from downtown.

Time to Spend

Plan to spend between 2.5 and 4 hours to walk the grounds and visit the main pavilions.

When to Visit

Weekday mornings offer the quietest experience and active animals. The grounds get crowded on weekends, public holidays, and sunny summer days. Spring and early autumn provide mild walking conditions, while winter visits are quieter though several species remain in indoor enclosures.

Nearby Attractions

Combine a visit with nearby landmarks in and around the riverbank:

  • Cathedral of St. Mary Magdalene (0.8 km)
  • Diocese of Warszawa-Praga (0.9 km)
  • Old Town Market Square in Warsaw (1.1 km)
  • Warsaw Barbican (1.1 km)
