Dumbarton Oaks

Located in the Georgetown neighborhood, this historic estate consists of a museum, a residence, and landscaped gardens. It was the home of diplomat Robert Woods Bliss and his wife before being donated to Harvard University in 1940. Visitors go here to view the curated art collections and the structured garden layouts.

Getting There

The estate is situated in the northwest quadrant of the city. From the city center, you can reach the site via ride-share services, local buses, or a combination of the Metro and a short walk. The journey typically takes 20 to 30 minutes depending on traffic.

Time Allocation

Allow approximately 3 to 4 hours to walk through the gardens and explore the museum galleries. The outdoor areas are expansive, and the interior exhibits require a slower pace for viewing.

When to Visit

The gardens change significantly with the seasons, making spring and autumn primary times for visitors. To avoid the largest crowds, arrive early in the morning. The site can become crowded during peak bloom periods and on weekends.

The estate is positioned near several other points of interest in and around Georgetown. You can combine your visit with the following:
