White House

Overview

The White House is the working office and residence of the U.S. president, standing at the center of Washington, D.C.'s government district. Visitors come to see the building most associated with the American presidency, view it from the surrounding public grounds and streets, and photograph the north and south facades framed by Lafayette Square and the Ellipse.

Getting there

From central Washington, D.C., the White House is easily reached on foot or by Metro, since it sits within walking distance of the National Mall and downtown hotel areas. Most travelers walk 10-20 minutes from nearby Metro stations, or take a short taxi or rideshare ride through midday traffic.

Time to allow

Viewing the exterior, walking the perimeter, and taking photos from Lafayette Square or the Ellipse typically takes 30-60 minutes. Allow more time if you plan to visit the White House Visitor Center a few blocks away for exhibits on the building's history.

Best time to visit

Early morning is quieter, before tour groups and school groups build up later in the day. The area can get crowded during midday and around public events, and security presence is heavier than at typical tourist sites, so keep this in mind if traveling with children or on a tight schedule.
