Mākaro / Ward Island

Mākaro / Ward Island is a small island located in Wellington Harbour at the southern tip of the North Island. Visitors go there primarily to view the harbour scenery and the city skyline from a maritime perspective. It is a common destination for those sailing or boating across the water.

Getting There

The island is accessible only by boat from the Wellington city centre. Depending on the vessel and weather conditions, the trip typically takes between 30 to 60 minutes. There are no road or bridge connections to the island.

Duration of Visit

Most visitors spend between two and four hours on the island, depending on whether they are stopping briefly during a sailing trip or staying longer to explore the shoreline.

When to Visit

The island is best visited during the summer months when weather conditions in the harbour are more stable. Because it is only accessible by boat, it does not experience the same crowds as mainland city attractions, though it is more popular during weekends and public holidays.
