Getting Around Wellington

Wellington is remarkably compact. The central corridor from the railway station through Lambton Quay, Te Aro, and Courtenay Place is best explored on foot. Walking regularly beats waiting for public transport across the downtown core.

Beyond the flat center, specific transport options take the lead:

  • Buses: The primary network for reaching hilly suburbs, Miramar, and coastal bays.
  • Commuter Trains: Best for rapid trips north to Petone, Lower Hutt, and the Kapiti Coast from Wellington Station.
  • Cable Car: Connects Lambton Quay to Kelburn, conquering the steep climb to the Botanic Garden.
  • Ferries: Ideal for harbor crossings to Days Bay and Matiu Somes Island.

Fares and Tickets

The reloadable Snapper card provides discounted fares on Metlink buses and trains compared to paying cash. Day passes exist for heavy transit users, but they do not suit visitors who spend most of their time walking within the central city.

Airport to City Options

  • Airport Express Bus: Runs between the terminal and Wellington Station. Time: roughly thirty minutes. Effort: low, with luggage racks. Cost band: moderate.
  • Taxis and Rideshares: Curbside pickup. Time: twenty minutes outside peak traffic. Effort: lowest. Cost band: high.
  • Suburban Buses: Require walking off-site to nearby stops. Time: longer. Effort: high with luggage. Cost band: low.

Practical Travel Notes

Peak congestion impacts the Mount Victoria Tunnel and Golden Mile between 07:30–09:00 and 16:30–18:30 on weekdays. Most services finish around midnight, though limited night buses run on Friday and Saturday. Metlink trains and buses feature step-free or ramp access, but surrounding hillside neighborhoods frequently feature steep steps.
