House of Wonders

The House of Wonders is the largest and tallest building in Stone Town, Zanzibar. Originally constructed as a palace for Sultan Barghash bin Said, it stands on the waterfront facing Forodhani Gardens. Visitors go here to see a primary examples of the architectural history of the region and a signature landmark of the city's skyline.

Getting There

The building is located within the heart of Stone Town. Since the city center is a pedestrian-heavy area with narrow alleys, most visitors reach the site on foot. Depending on where you are staying in the center, the walk typically takes between 5 and 15 minutes.

Duration of Visit

Allow approximately 1 to 2 hours to view the exterior and explore the immediate grounds. The time spent may vary depending on whether you are focusing on the architecture or the surrounding waterfront area.

When to Visit

Early morning or late afternoon is recommended to avoid the midday heat. The area can become crowded, particularly during the peak tourist seasons or in the evenings when people gather nearby for the food markets. Avoid visiting during heavy rain, as the waterfront area can become congested.
