Pura Kebo Edan

Pura Kebo Edan

What it is

Pura Kebo Edan is a small Balinese temple best known for a large statue traditionally identified with a Bhairava figure, standing on a group of smaller figures. The name is often translated as "temple of the mad buffalo." It's a modest site compared to Bali's larger temple complexes, and most visitors see it as a quick stop rather than a destination in itself, but the statue and the older stone carvings around the compound are worth a look if you're already in the area.

Getting there

The temple sits in the Bedulu area near Ubud, a few kilometers from Ubud's town centre. By car or scooter, the drive from central Ubud typically takes around 15-20 minutes depending on traffic. There's no direct public transport, so a private driver, scooter rental, or ride-hailing app is the practical option.

How much time to allow

Most visitors spend 15-30 minutes here, enough to view the main statue and walk around the compound.

When to go

Mornings tend to be cooler and quieter, which makes for more comfortable walking and viewing. As a minor temple, it doesn't draw heavy crowds the way nearby Goa Gajah does, so timing is less critical here than at bigger sites. As with any active temple in Bali, dress modestly and be mindful of ongoing ceremonies or offerings.

What to combine it with

The site works well as part of a short cluster of stops in Bedulu. The Purbakala Archaeological Museum is just 0.2km away, and Pura Penataran Sasih is about 0.5km off. Goa Gajah (Elephant Cave), a larger and more visited site, is roughly 0.9km away, and the Petanu River is about 1.1km from the temple if you want a short walk through rice-field scenery to round out the visit.
