Sungi River

Sungi River

The Sungi River is a river in Bali, Indonesia. Its source is located in the mountainous area in the central-northern part of Bali. It flows through the ancient site of Mengwi and enters the sea to the west of Kerobokan Kelod on the southern coast.

Sungi River

The Sungi River rises in the hills of central-northern Bali and flows south, passing near the old temple complex at Mengwi before reaching the sea just west of Kerobokan Kelod on the south coast. It isn't a developed sight with facilities or organized activities — the appeal is the stretch of river landscape itself, including rice terraces and village scenery along its course near Mengwi, and the quieter coastal river mouth area near Kerobokan. It suits travellers who want a low-key, undeveloped spot rather than a formal attraction.

Getting there

The most practical access point is near Mengwi, reachable by car or scooter from central Bali; from areas like Seminyak or Denpasar this is roughly a 30-45 minute drive depending on traffic. The river mouth near Kerobokan Kelod is closer to the southern beach towns.

Time to allow

There's no fixed circuit, so plan this as a short stop of 30-60 minutes on the way to or from a nearby site rather than a standalone half-day outing.

When to go

Mornings tend to be cooler and quieter for walking near the water. Avoid the rainy season if you're hoping to see the river at its calmest, as flow and clarity can vary sharply with rainfall.
