Blanco Renaissance Museum

Blanco Renaissance Museum

The Blanco Renaissance Museum is a museum located in Ubud on Bali, Indonesia that opened December 28, 1998. It's devoted to the art of the painter Antonio Blanco.

Antonio Blanco's home and studio in Ubud

This museum occupies the former house and studio of Antonio Blanco, a Spanish-born painter who settled in Ubud and became known for ornate, often erotically themed works depicting Balinese women, along with poetry and collage pieces incorporating his own verses. The building itself, perched above the Campuhan river valley, is as much a draw as the collection: elaborate Balinese-Spanish architecture, domed ceilings, and gardens with peacocks on the grounds. It suits travellers interested in Bali's expatriate art history rather than traditional Balinese painting, which is better represented at the nearby Puri Lukisan Museum.

Getting there

It sits on the western edge of central Ubud, close to the Campuhan Ridge area. From Ubud Palace or the main market, it's about a 15-20 minute walk, or a 5-10 minute drive/scooter ride depending on traffic. Many visitors combine it with a walk along Jalan Raya Ubud heading west.

Time to allow

Most visitors spend around 45 minutes to an hour here, enough to walk through the gallery rooms and the house's interior. The site itself is fairly compact.

When to go

Mornings tend to be quieter and cooler for walking over from central Ubud. It doesn't draw the large tour groups seen at some other Ubud sights, so crowding is generally less of an issue than at the Sacred Monkey Forest or the palace.

Combine with

  • Puri Lukisan Museum (0.7km) — a natural pairing for comparing Blanco's style with classical and modern Balinese painting.
  • Pura Taman Saraswati (0.8km) — a water temple with lotus ponds, easy to fold into the same walk.
  • Ubud Palace (0.9km) — central landmark with traditional architecture and occasional dance performances.
  • Pura Dalem Agung Padangtegal (1.5km) — a temple near the Monkey Forest, a bit further but walkable if extending the day.
