Pura Dalem Agung Padangtegal

Pura Dalem Agung Padangtegal

Pura Dalem Agung Padangtegal, or Padangtegal Great Temple of Death, is one of three Hindu temples making up a temple complex located in the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary – commonly called the "Ubud Monkey Forest" – of Padangtegal, Ubud, Bali, Indonesia.

What it is

Pura Dalem Agung Padangtegal is a Hindu temple dedicated to Shiva in his destructive/transformative aspect, and it functions as the "temple of death" for the village of Padangtegal. It sits inside the grounds of the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary, so most visitors encounter it while walking through the forest rather than as a standalone destination. The temple is still an active place of worship, with stone gateways, guardian statues, and carvings typical of Balinese temple architecture, and it's one of three temples within the sanctuary complex. Long-tailed macaques move freely around the courtyards and structures, which is part of what makes a visit here different from a quiet temple visit elsewhere in Ubud.

Getting there

The temple is reached through the Ubud Monkey Forest entrance, which is within easy walking distance of central Ubud — around 10-15 minutes on foot from the main Ubud Palace area, or a few minutes by car or scooter given local traffic. Once inside the sanctuary, the temple is a short walk along the forest paths.

Time to allow

Seeing the temple itself takes only a short while, but since it's inside the Monkey Forest, most people combine it with a walk through the sanctuary, which typically takes 45 minutes to an hour and a half depending on how much time you spend watching the monkeys and exploring the paths.

When to go

Early morning tends to be quieter and cooler for walking through the forest. The Monkey Forest is a popular stop for visitors to Ubud, so midday can get busy with tour groups. Keep an eye on belongings and food, as the macaques are accustomed to visitors and can be bold around bags and snacks.

What to combine it with

The Ubud Monkey Forest itself is the immediate surroundings (0km). The Agung Rai Museum of Art is close by at 0.4km and works well as a follow-up stop. Ubud Palace (1.4km) and Pura Taman Saraswati (1.5km) are both within walking range and pair naturally with a day spent exploring central Ubud on foot.
