Khaosan Road
Die Khaosan Road ist eine rund 400 Meter lange Straße im Stadtteil Bang Lam Phu der thailändischen Hauptstadt Bangkok. Sie liegt etwa einen Kilometer nordöstlich von Königspalast und Wat Phra Kaeo.
What it is
Khaosan Road is a short, dense street in the Bang Lamphu area of Bangkok's old city, dating back to 1892. It became known internationally as a backpacker hub, and today it's lined with guesthouses, street food stalls, bars, souvenir shops, tattoo parlours, and vendors selling everything from clothing to fake ID cards. Travellers go for the atmosphere more than any single sight: it's a place to eat cheaply, people-watch, and experience Bangkok's street-level nightlife scene.
Getting there
Khaosan Road sits close to the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew, about 1 km to the south, so it's often combined with a walk through that part of the old city. It isn't served directly by the BTS Skytrain or MRT, so most visitors reach it by taxi, tuk-tuk, river boat to the nearby Phra Arthit pier, or bus. From central Bangkok, expect a 20-40 minute ride depending on traffic and starting point.
How much time to allow
An hour or two is enough to walk the street, browse stalls, and grab food. If you plan to eat a full meal, have a few drinks, or settle in for the evening scene, allow half a day or more.
When to go
The street is quiet by day and becomes considerably busier and louder after dark, when stalls, bars, and street performers fill the road and foot traffic slows to a crawl. If you prefer a calmer look at the area, visit in the late afternoon before the evening crowds build.
