Piazza del Duomo
두오모 광장(이탈리아어: Piazza del Duomo)은 이탈리아 피렌체에 있는 광장이다.
What it is
Piazza del Duomo is the religious heart of Florence, a square where the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, the octagonal Baptistery of San Giovanni, and Giotto's bell tower stand side by side. Together they form the core of the Historic Centre of Florence UNESCO site. Most visitors come to see the cathedral's brick dome by Brunelleschi, the Baptistery's bronze doors (the originals of the "Gates of Paradise" are now in the nearby museum, with a replica on the building itself), and the marble-clad facades that define the square.
Getting there
The square sits in the centre of Florence and is walkable from most hotels in the old town, usually within 10-15 minutes on foot. From Santa Maria Novella train station it's about a 10-minute walk. If arriving by air, both Florence (FLR) and Pisa (PSA) airports connect to the city centre by train or shuttle bus, followed by a short walk into the pedestrian zone around the Duomo.
How much time to allow
Seeing the exterior and square itself takes 20-30 minutes. If you plan to go inside the cathedral, climb the dome or the bell tower, or visit the Baptistery and Opera del Duomo museum, allow at least half a day in total, since each of these is a separate, often slow-moving visit.
When to go
The piazza is crowded for most of the day, especially in late morning and early afternoon and during spring and summer. Early morning, shortly after sunrise, is noticeably quieter and better for photos of the facades without crowds in the way.
What to combine it with
Everything of note is within a couple of minutes' walk:
- Florence Cathedral – right on the square
- Giotto's Campanile – 0.1km, the bell tower beside the cathedral
- Gates of Paradise – 0.1km, the Baptistery's famous bronze doors
- Museo dell'Opera del Duomo – 0.1km, housing the original door panels and cathedral artworks
These four sites can realistically be combined into a single visit to the square.
