나카스

Nakasu

What it is

Nakasu is a small island wedged between the Naka and Hakata rivers, and it functions as Fukuoka's main nightlife and entertainment district. By day it's a fairly ordinary stretch of streets with offices and shops; after dark it fills with neon signage, hostess clubs, bars, and restaurants, and it's also where many of Fukuoka's famous yatai (open-air food stalls) set up along the riverbanks. Travellers come here less for sightseeing landmarks and more for the atmosphere of the river walkways at night and for eating at the stalls.

Getting there

Nakasu sits right at the edge of central Fukuoka, an easy walk from Tenjin (about 0.7km) and close to the Hakata area as well. It's served directly by Nakasu-Kawabata Station on the subway, so from most points in the city centre it's a short ride or a walk of 10-15 minutes.

How much time to allow

An hour or two is enough to stroll the riverside paths and get a feel for the area, but if you plan to eat at the yatai stalls, budget at least two hours to allow time for queuing and settling in at a stall.

When to go

This is primarily an evening and nighttime destination — the yatai stalls and the neon streetscape are the main draw, and there's comparatively little reason to visit during the day. Weekend nights get busy and stalls can fill up quickly, so arriving earlier in the evening on a weeknight makes it easier to get a seat.

Combine it with

  • Kushida Shrine (0.4km) — a quiet contrast if you visit earlier in the day before Nakasu's nightlife picks up.
  • Fukuoka Asian Art Museum (0.3km) — worth pairing with a daytime visit before heading back to Nakasu in the evening.
  • Hakata-za (0.4km) — a kabuki theatre nearby if you want to combine a performance with dinner at the stalls afterward.
  • Tenjin (0.7km) — Fukuoka's main shopping and dining hub, an easy walk before or after exploring Nakasu.
