Tōchō-ji Temple

Tōchō-ji

Tōchō-ji Temple

Tōchō-ji is a Shingon Buddhist temple in the Hakata district, founded in 806 by Kūkai (Kōbō Daishi), the monk who established the Shingon school. It's considered the oldest Shingon temple on Kyushu. The main draws are the temple grounds themselves and a large seated wooden Buddha statue housed on site, along with a five-story pagoda. It's a working temple rather than a museum piece, so the atmosphere is quieter than at more heavily promoted sites.

Getting there

Tōchō-ji sits in central Hakata, within walking distance of Hakata Station and the Gion subway station. From most points in central Fukuoka, a taxi or subway ride plus a short walk gets you there in well under 20 minutes.

How long to spend

Most visitors need 20-40 minutes to see the pagoda, the main hall, and the Buddha statue at an unhurried pace.

When to go

Mornings tend to be calmer. The temple is not a major tour-bus destination, so heavy crowding is uncommon, though it can get busier around festival dates or cherry blossom season if you're combining it with a walk through the neighborhood.

Combine it with

The temple sits in a cluster of religious sites, making it easy to visit several on foot:

  • Shōfuku-ji Temple (0.2km) — a short walk away, reputed to be Japan's first Zen temple.
  • Jōten-ji Temple (0.3km) — another nearby Zen temple worth a brief stop.
  • Kushida Shrine (0.4km) — a Shinto shrine within easy walking distance, offering a contrast to the Buddhist temples.
  • Hakata-za (0.7km) — a kabuki theatre a bit further on, useful if you're extending the walk toward central Hakata.
