Ōhori Park

Ōhori Park

Ōhori Park is a large public park in Chūō-ku, built around a lake that was once part of Fukuoka Castle's moat system. The main draw is the walk around the lake itself, plus the connected Japanese garden and the wooded castle ruins next door. It's a place locals use for jogging and dog-walking as much as a sightseeing spot, which gives it a lived-in feel rather than a purely touristic one.

Getting there

From central Fukuoka (Hakata or Tenjin), the park is a short subway ride on the Kūkō Line to Ōhorikōen Station, followed by a few minutes on foot to the lake. Door to door from Tenjin, allow roughly 15–20 minutes.

How long to stay

Walking the full loop around the lake takes about 30–40 minutes at a relaxed pace. Add time if you want to sit by the water, visit the Japanese garden within the park, or continue on to the castle ruins — a couple of hours covers the park and its immediate surroundings comfortably.

When to go

Early morning or late afternoon are quieter, since the paths get busy with local walkers and runners at other times. Weekends tend to draw more people. The park is at its best when the weather is mild enough for a lakeside walk; midsummer afternoons in Fukuoka can be hot with little shade over parts of the loop.

Combine it with

  • Fukuoka Art Museum (0.4km) — inside the park grounds, an easy add-on.
  • Fukuoka Castle ruins (0.6km) — adjacent hillside site, good for combining with the lake walk.
  • Kōrokan archaeological site (0.9km) — a short walk further for those interested in history.
  • Oh Sadaharu Baseball Museum (1.7km) — further out, worth a stop if time allows.

Kōrokan

The kōrokan (鴻臚館) were guest houses for foreign ambassadors, traveling monks, and merchants that existed in Japan from the Asuka period to the end of the Heian period. These guest houses existed in Fukuoka, Osaka and Kyoto. The word kōrokan (鴻臚館) was coined in the Heian period by using the first two characters from the Chinese name 鴻臚寺(zh) for Han dynasty and Northern Qi dynasty temples charged with the responsibility of hosting foreign dignitaries. The ruins of the kōrokan in Fukuoka were discovered on the grounds of Maizuru Castle Park in 1987 and designated a National Historic Site...
