Our Lady of Victory Cathedral, Fukuoka

Our Lady of Victory Cathedral, Fukuoka

The Our Lady of Victory Cathedral also called Daimyomachi Church is a religious building affiliated with the Catholic Church located in the city of Fukuoka, Japan. It is dedicated to Our Lady of Victory.

Our Lady of Victory Cathedral

Also known as Daimyomachi Church, this is a Catholic cathedral in central Fukuoka. It's a working church rather than a museum piece, so the appeal is mostly architectural and atmospheric: a European-style brick building with twin spires that stands out against the surrounding office and shopping district. Travellers usually stop by for the exterior and a quiet look inside rather than for any single headline feature.

Getting there

It sits right next to Tenjin, Fukuoka's main downtown hub, so it's an easy walk of a few minutes from the Tenjin subway station or the surrounding shopping streets. If you're coming from Fukuoka Airport, take the subway to Tenjin and walk from there.

How long to spend

Fifteen to thirty minutes is enough for most visitors — time to look at the facade, step inside if it's open to visitors at the time, and take a few photos.

When to go

Mornings or early afternoon on a weekday tend to be calmest, since the cathedral is tucked into a busy commercial area that fills with shoppers and office workers as the day goes on. Avoid visiting during active services if you'd rather not disturb worshippers.

Combine it with

Because it's essentially inside Tenjin (0.4km), it fits naturally into a stroll around that shopping and dining area. The Fukuoka Prefectural Museum of Art (0.8km) and Seinan Gakuin University Biblical Botanical Garden (0.9km) are both close enough to add on foot, and the Kōrokan historical site (1km) rounds out a half-day loop through this part of the city.

Kōrokan

The kōrokan (鴻臚館) were guest houses for foreign ambassadors, traveling monks, and merchants that existed in Japan from the Asuka period to the end of the Heian period. These guest houses existed in Fukuoka, Osaka and Kyoto. The word kōrokan (鴻臚館) was coined in the Heian period by using the first two characters from the Chinese name 鴻臚寺(zh) for Han dynasty and Northern Qi dynasty temples charged with the responsibility of hosting foreign dignitaries. The ruins of the kōrokan in Fukuoka were discovered on the grounds of Maizuru Castle Park in 1987 and designated a National Historic Site...
