Fukuoka Prefectural Museum of Art

Fukuoka Prefectural Museum of Art

Fukuoka Prefectural Museum of Art

This museum focuses on artists connected to Fukuoka Prefecture and the wider Kyūshū region, and its collection includes work by Koga Harue. It's a reasonable stop for anyone interested in modern Japanese art from outside the Tokyo-centric mainstream, offering a regional perspective rather than a general survey. The museum grew out of the Fukuoka Prefectural Cultural Hall, which opened in 1964 as a combined library and art space before the current museum took over in 1985.

Getting there

The museum sits close to central Fukuoka, within easy reach of Tenjin. From the Tenjin area it's roughly a 10-15 minute walk, or a short taxi ride if you'd rather not walk. It's also walkable from the Hakata Port area, though that takes longer.

Time to allow

An hour or two is enough for most visitors to see the collection at a comfortable pace, more if there's a special exhibition running alongside the permanent collection.

When to go

As an indoor museum, it's a good option regardless of season or weather, including hot or rainy days in Fukuoka. It's not generally known as a crowded spot, so there's no particular time of day you need to avoid for that reason alone.

Combine it with

The museum is well placed for a walking itinerary: Tenjin and the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum are both about 0.7km away, and Hakata-za theatre is roughly the same distance. Hakata Port Tower is a bit further at 0.8km, making it feasible to link all four into a single half-day loop through central Fukuoka.
