Yūsentei Park

Yūsentei Park

Yūsentei Park is a park in Jōnan-ku, Fukuoka, Japan. It was originally built in the mid-Edo period (1754) for Kuroda Tsugutaka, the 6th domain head of the Kuroda clan. It was named Yūsentei after a later lord's tanka poetry.

Yūsentei Park

Yūsentei Park is centred on a landscaped pond garden built in the mid-18th century as a retreat for Kuroda Tsugutaka, the 6th head of the Kuroda domain that ruled Fukuoka. The name comes from a poem by a later lord. The main draw is the garden itself and the old villa building beside the pond, which give a sense of Edo-period landscaping on a modest, walkable scale rather than a sprawling estate.

Getting there

The park sits in Jōnan-ku, southwest of central Fukuoka. From the city centre (Tenjin or Hakata), plan on a bus or taxi ride of roughly 20–30 minutes, as there is no subway station directly at the park.

Time to allow

The garden is compact, so 30–45 minutes is usually enough to walk the pond circuit and see the villa building.

When to go

Morning or early afternoon on a weekday tends to be quieter. Because it's a pond garden, it's worth checking whether the villa or grounds close early or have restricted access on rainy days before building it into a tight itinerary.

Combine with

  • Fukuoka Municipal Zoo and Botanical Garden (1.7km) — a family-friendly stop within easy reach.
  • Fukuoka Oriental Ceramics Museum (1.7km) — a low-key museum visit to pair with the garden.
  • Fukuoka Japan Temple (1.8km) — another quiet, contemplative site nearby.
  • Fukuoka Art Museum (2.4km) — a longer stop if you have more time in the area.

These are all a short taxi or bus ride apart, making it possible to string two or three together in a half-day loop.
