La Scala
스칼라 극장(이탈리아어: Teatro alla Scala, 널리 알려진 대로는 La Scala)은 이탈리아 밀라노에 있는 오페라 극장이다. 1778년 8월 3일에 "Nuovo Regio Ducal Teatro alla Scala"라는 이름으로 allora의 L'Europa riconosciuta 공연과 함께 개장되었다.
What it is
La Scala is Milan's opera house, in operation since 1778 on the site of an earlier theatre destroyed by fire. It's a working venue with an active season of opera, ballet, and concerts, rather than a static monument — most visitors either attend a performance or visit the attached museum, the Museo Teatrale alla Scala, which displays costumes, instruments, and memorabilia and lets you look into the auditorium itself.
Getting there
La Scala sits right in the historic centre of Milan, a short walk from the Duomo through the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II — about 5-10 minutes on foot. The Duomo metro station (lines M1 and M3) is the closest stop, leaving a walk of a few minutes. If arriving from Malpensa (MXP) or Linate (LIN) airport, plan on getting into the centre first by train or bus, then covering this last stretch on foot or by metro.
How much time to allow
A visit to the museum alone typically takes around 45 minutes to an hour. If you're attending a performance, allow for the length of the show itself plus time beforehand for the theatre's foyers and interior.
When to go
The museum can get busy around midday and on weekends, so an early visit tends to be calmer. For performances, arriving well ahead of curtain time is worth it, since seating and cloakroom queues can build up quickly near the start.
What to combine it with
The Museo Teatrale alla Scala is effectively part of the same visit. From there it's a two-minute walk to Gallerie d'Italia – Milano, and about the same to the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II and Museo Poldi Pezzoli, all close enough to fold into a single stroll through this part of the centre.
