Milan Cathedral

Milan Cathedral

Milan Cathedral, formally the Metropolitan Cathedral-Basilica of the Nativity of Saint Mary, is the seat of the Archbishop of Milan and the city's principal church. Visitors come for the scale of the Gothic structure itself — the spires and marble facade — as well as for the interior and, at many cathedrals of this type, access to the roof terraces, which are usually the main draw for the view over the city.

Getting there

The cathedral sits in Piazza del Duomo, in the historic centre of Milan. It's reachable on foot from most central hotels, and the Duomo metro station (lines M1 and M3) opens directly onto the square, making it one of the easiest landmarks in the city to reach regardless of where you're staying.

How long to allow

Plan on at least an hour for the interior and exterior. If you go up to the roof terraces, add another hour, since the queues and the walk across the roof itself take time.

When to go

Piazza del Duomo and the cathedral are busiest in late morning and early afternoon, especially in peak season. Arriving early or later in the day tends to mean shorter lines, both for entry and for the roof access.

Combine it with

  • Piazza del Duomo (0.1 km) — the square the cathedral opens onto, worth a slow walk around before or after visiting.
  • Museo del Novecento (0.1 km) — a museum of 20th-century Italian art right on the same square.
  • Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II (0.2 km) — the historic covered shopping arcade connecting the Duomo to Piazza della Scala, a natural next stop.

If you're flying in or out, Milan is served by Malpensa (MXP) and Linate (LIN) airports.
