Santa Maria presso San Satiro
Santa Maria presso San Satiro is a church in Milan. The Italian Renaissance structure (1476–1482) houses the early medieval shrine to Satyrus, brother of Saint Ambrose. The church is known for its false apse, an early example of trompe-l'œil, attributed to Donato Bramante.
What it is
This is a small Renaissance church tucked just off Via Torino, built between 1476 and 1482 around a much older shrine to Satyrus, the brother of Saint Ambrose. Most visitors come for one specific feature: the apse behind the altar looks like a deep, vaulted chancel, but the actual space is only a few feet deep. Donato Bramante used perspective painting and shallow relief to create the illusion, and it's one of the earlier known examples of architectural trompe-l'œil. Step to either side of the central aisle and the effect visibly flattens.
Getting there
It sits right behind Milan Cathedral, close enough to reach on foot from Piazza del Duomo in a couple of minutes. Anyone arriving by metro would use the Duomo station on lines M1 or M3.
Time and crowds
Fifteen to twenty minutes is enough to take in the interior and the false apse. It's a working parish church rather than a major tourist stop, so it rarely feels crowded, though a Mass in progress will limit access to the front of the nave.
