Castel dell’Ovo
Castel dell'Ovo
Castel dell'Ovo
Castel dell'Ovo sits on the small former island of Megaride, now connected to the Naples waterfront by a causeway, with the marina of Borgo Marinari beneath its walls. It's the oldest fortified structure in the city and the appeal is mostly about place rather than interiors: walking the ramparts gives open views over the Gulf of Naples, Vesuvius, and the Bay of Chiaia. Inside, sections are relatively bare, with some Roman and medieval remains and exhibition spaces. Much of the story attached to the castle is legend rather than documented history, including the tale of a magical egg buried by Virgil in the foundations.
Getting there
It's a short walk from the historic centre — roughly 15-20 minutes from Piazza del Plebiscito along the seafront, or you can reach it via public transport to the Chiaia/Santa Lucia area and walk the last stretch along Via Partenope.
Time to allow
An hour is usually enough to walk the perimeter, climb to the upper terraces, and look around the small marina below.
When to go
Late afternoon toward sunset gives the best light for the views over the bay. The exterior and marina area can get busy with visitors and diners in the evening, especially in summer; visiting earlier in the day is quieter.
Combine it with
- Piazza del Plebiscito (0.8km) and the Royal Palace of Naples (0.9km) — both an easy walk away, forming a natural loop with the castle.
- San Francesco di Paola (0.8km), the church facing the piazza, can be seen on the same walk.
- Teatro di San Carlo (1km) is close enough to add on if you're continuing into the centre.
