Die Zoologische Station Neapel, italienisch Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn, ist ein biologisches Forschungsinstitut mit Sitz in der italienischen Stadt Neapel und zählt zu den ältesten durchgehend bestehenden biowissenschaftlichen Forschungseinrichtungen der Welt. Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn
This is a marine biology research institute, one of the oldest of its kind in the world, set inside the Villa Comunale park along Naples' seafront. It combines active laboratories with an aquarium open to visitors, so alongside the scientific research you can see tanks of Mediterranean marine life — fish, invertebrates, and other species drawn from the surrounding sea. It's a good stop for anyone interested in marine science or looking for a lower-key alternative to the city's grand museums.
Getting there
It sits inside the Villa Comunale gardens on the waterfront (Riviera di Chiaia / Via Caracciolo side), an easy walk of about 15-20 minutes from Piazza del Plebiscito or the Royal Palace along the seafront promenade. It's also reachable by bus along Riviera di Chiaia, but walking is straightforward if you're already in the historic centre.
Time to allow
The aquarium itself is compact, so an hour or so is usually enough to see the tanks at a comfortable pace. You can extend the visit with a walk through the surrounding Villa Comunale park.
When to go
As a small aquarium, it can feel crowded when tour or school groups pass through, so arriving earlier in the day tends to be calmer. Because the park setting is part of the appeal, a dry day makes the walk there and back more pleasant.
