Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn

Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn

The Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn is a research institute in Naples, Italy, devoted to basic research in biology. Research is largely interdisciplinary involving the fields of evolution, biochemistry, molecular biology, neurobiology, cell biology, biological oceanography, marine botany, molecular plant biology, benthic ecology, and ecophysiology.

Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn

This is a marine biology research institute, one of the oldest of its kind in the world, set inside the Villa Comunale park along Naples' seafront. It combines active laboratories with an aquarium open to visitors, so alongside the scientific research you can see tanks of Mediterranean marine life — fish, invertebrates, and other species drawn from the surrounding sea. It's a good stop for anyone interested in marine science or looking for a lower-key alternative to the city's grand museums.

Getting there

It sits inside the Villa Comunale gardens on the waterfront (Riviera di Chiaia / Via Caracciolo side), an easy walk of about 15-20 minutes from Piazza del Plebiscito or the Royal Palace along the seafront promenade. It's also reachable by bus along Riviera di Chiaia, but walking is straightforward if you're already in the historic centre.

Time to allow

The aquarium itself is compact, so an hour or so is usually enough to see the tanks at a comfortable pace. You can extend the visit with a walk through the surrounding Villa Comunale park.

When to go

As a small aquarium, it can feel crowded when tour or school groups pass through, so arriving earlier in the day tends to be calmer. Because the park setting is part of the appeal, a dry day makes the walk there and back more pleasant.

Combine with

  • San Francesco di Paola (1 km) — a short walk away, on Piazza del Plebiscito.
  • Piazza del Plebiscito (1.2 km) and the Royal Palace of Naples (1.2 km) — group these together as one stop.
  • Castel dell'Ovo (1.1 km) — pairs naturally with the seafront walk, especially if you continue along the promenade.

Castel dell'Ovo is a seafront castle in Naples, located on the former island of Megaride, now a peninsula, on the Gulf of Naples in Italy. In the legend, Virgil put a magical egg into the foundations to support the fortifications. It remains there along with his bones, and had this egg been broken, the castle would have been destroyed and a series of disastrous events for Naples would have followed. The castle is located between the distric...
