San Lorenzo Maggiore
San Lorenzo Maggiore ist eine Kirche und ein ehemaliges Kloster in Neapel, Italien. Sie befindet sich geografisch genau im Zentrum der antiken griechisch-römischen Stadt, an der Kreuzung der Via San Gregorio Armeno und der Via dei Tribunali. Den Namen „San Lorenzo“ tragen auch das in den Gebäuden des Klosters neu eröffnete Museum und die archäologischen Ausgrabungen eines griechisch-römischen Marktes unter der Kirche.
Overview
San Lorenzo Maggiore is a working church and monastic complex sitting at what was the civic and religious center of ancient Neapolis. What sets it apart from Naples' many churches is what lies beneath: excavated remains of the Greco-Roman market (macellum) and earlier street levels, accessible on the same visit. Above ground, the church itself combines a Gothic apse with later Baroque decoration, and the adjoining museum displays finds from the excavations along with material tracing the site's continuous use from antiquity onward.
Getting there
The church sits in the heart of the historic center, at the crossing of via San Gregorio Armeno and via dei Tribunali, an area closed to most traffic. From central Naples it's typically a walk of 10-15 minutes through the old town's narrow streets. The Museo/Dante or Duomo metro stops are within easy walking distance if arriving by public transport.
Time to allow
Plan for at least an hour to see the church, the underground excavations, and the museum together; visitors with a strong interest in archaeology may want closer to two hours.
When to go
Via San Gregorio Armeno, the street leading to the church, is known for its Nativity-scene craft shops and gets very crowded, especially in the run-up to Christmas and on weekends. Visiting on a weekday morning tends to mean a calmer approach and fewer people underground.
