This church sits at one end of Piazza Mercato, once the centre of civic life in Naples before urban renewal cut the square off from the rest of the city around 1900. It was founded in the 13th century by Carmelite friars who had fled the Holy Land during the Crusades, reportedly landing in the Bay of Naples on Amalfitan ships. The most recognizable feature is the 75-metre bell tower, which stands out over the surrounding rooftops even against newer buildings nearby. The church remains an active place of worship rather than a purely historical site.
Getting there
The church sits on Piazza Mercato, on the edge of the historic centre, and is reachable on foot from most points in central Naples within 15–20 minutes. It's an easy add-on to a walk through the old town rather than a separate trip.

Plan on 30–45 minutes to see the interior and bell tower and take in the square itself.
When to go
Piazza Mercato is a working city square, not a curated tourist plaza, so expect ordinary street activity and traffic around it rather than a quiet setting. Mornings tend to be calmer for a visit inside the church itself.
