Engelsburg
Castel Sant'Angelo
Die Engelsburg ist ein Museum in Rom, das ursprünglich ein Mausoleum für römische Kaiser und später Fluchtburg und Gefängnis der Päpste war. What it is
Castel Sant'Angelo began as Emperor Hadrian's mausoleum, built to hold his ashes and those of his family. Over the following centuries the popes converted it into a fortified stronghold, connecting it to the Vatican by a raised corridor they used to flee to safety during sieges. Inside you'll find the original Roman core, papal apartments with frescoed rooms, a collection of historic armor and weapons, and terraces that open onto wide views over the Tiber and the city rooftops.
Getting there
From the historic centre near Piazza Navona, it's a walk of around 15 minutes along the river. From Termini station, a bus or taxi takes roughly 20-25 minutes depending on traffic.
How much time to allow
Plan on two to three hours to see the papal rooms, the armor collection, and the rooftop terrace without rushing.
When to go
Mornings tend to be calmer than afternoons, and the site draws large crowds around midday, especially in the warmer months. The terrace near closing time offers a quieter moment and good light for views over the river.
What to combine it with
- Piazza Navona (0.7km) — an easy walk, good for pairing on the same outing.
- Saint Peter's Square (0.8km) — reachable via the same riverside route, especially if walking the old papal passage direction.
