Nationale Chiang-Kai-shek-Gedächtnishalle

Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall

What it is

This is a large memorial complex built during Taiwan's martial law era to honor Chiang Kai-shek, the former President of the Republic of China. Beyond the central hall with its white walls and blue-tiled roof, the site includes a public park, gardens, and gates opening onto Liberty Square. In recent years the exhibits inside have expanded to also address Taiwan's martial law period (1949–1987), so it works both as a monument to Chiang and as a place to learn about that era of Taiwanese history.

Getting there

The site sits close to Taipei's city centre and is served directly by its own MRT station (Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall Station), making it an easy 15-20 minute ride from most central districts. If arriving from Taoyuan International Airport (TPE), plan on roughly an hour combining the airport MRT with a transfer to the city metro system.

Time to allow

Budget around 1 to 2 hours to see the main hall, walk the grounds, and take in Liberty Square. Add more time if you want to linger in the park areas or explore the surrounding square at a slower pace.

When to go

The plaza and steps in front of the hall can get busy, especially around the changing of the guard ceremony, so arrive early if you want quieter photos. The open square offers little shade, so a visit earlier or later in the day is more comfortable during Taipei's hot, humid months.

Combine it with

  • Liberty Square — immediately adjacent (0km), effectively part of the same visit.
  • National Theater and Concert Hall — a short 0.4km walk across the square, worth pairing for the matching classical architecture.
  • Taipei Taiwan Temple — about 0.7km away, an easy add-on if continuing on foot.
  • Taipei Guest House — roughly 0.8km away, another nearby historic stop to round out the walk.
