228 Peace Memorial Park
2·28 평화기념공원(중국어 정체자: 二二八和平公園, 병음: èrèrbāhépíngjìniàngōngyuán)은 중화민국 타이베이시에 있는 공원이다. 공원 안에는 타이베이얼얼바기념관과 국립타이완박물관이 있다. 1996년 2월 28일에 2·28사건을 추모하고 사과하는 의미로 조성되었다.
What it is
This is a large downtown park built around the events of the February 28 Incident of 1947, when Taiwanese civilians were killed by Kuomintang forces in a crackdown that shaped decades of martial law. The 228 Memorial Monument sits at the center of the park, and the Taipei 228 Memorial Museum occupies a former radio station building that operated under both Japanese colonial rule and the KMT government. Beyond the historical sites, it functions as an ordinary city park, with a bandshell, ponds, walking paths, and exercise areas used by local residents.
Getting there
The park sits in the government district of Zhongzheng, an easy walk from Taipei's main downtown area. From the central business district it's typically a 10-15 minute walk or a short MRT ride to the NTU Hospital or Taipei Main Station stations, both within a few minutes of the park's entrances.
Time to allow
Plan for 30-45 minutes to walk through the park and see the monument grounds. Add an hour or more if visiting the Taipei 228 Memorial Museum, which has exhibits on the events and their aftermath.
When to go
Mornings and late afternoons are quieter, when local residents come through for exercise. The park gets more foot traffic around midday and on weekends. Being outdoors and mostly shaded by trees, it's manageable even in Taipei's summer heat, though the museum offers a cooler break if needed.
Combine it with
The National Taiwan Museum stands right at the park's north entrance (0.1km), making it a natural add-on for the same visit. The Taipei Guest House is a short 0.3km walk away, and Shin Kong Life Tower is about 0.4km off, useful if you want a city view or shopping stop afterward. Taipei Twins is a bit farther at 0.8km if you have extra time.
