Founded in 1908, this is Taiwan's oldest museum, built during the Japanese colonial period. The domed, colonnaded building in Zhongzheng District is itself worth a look, and the collections inside cover natural history, Taiwanese indigenous culture, and archaeology, making it a reasonable stop for visitors who want context on the island before exploring further.
Getting there
It sits right in central Taipei, close to Taipei Main Station and within easy reach by MRT or on foot from most downtown hotels — figure on 10-15 minutes from Main Station.

Most visitors spend around one to two hours inside, depending on interest in the natural history and indigenous culture exhibits.
When to go
Weekday mornings tend to be quieter, since the museum sits next to a popular park and can draw more visitors, including school groups, on weekends and holidays. Being an indoor museum, it's also a convenient option on hot or rainy days.
