National Taiwan Museum
Founded in 1908, this is Taiwan's oldest museum, built during the Japanese colonial period. The domed, colonnaded building in Zhongzheng District is itself worth a look, and the collections inside cover natural history, Taiwanese indigenous culture, and archaeology, making it a reasonable stop for visitors who want context on the island before exploring further.

It sits right in central Taipei, close to Taipei Main Station and within easy reach by MRT or on foot from most downtown hotels — figure on 10-15 minutes from Main Station.
