What it is
This is a memorial hall for Dr. Sun Yat-sen, founder of the Republic of China, completed in 1972 in Taipei's Xinyi District. Inside, exhibits cover his life and the revolution he led, while the surrounding grounds and interior spaces double as a public venue for concerts, exhibitions and community events. It's a place for understanding modern Taiwanese and Chinese history rather than just a photo stop, though the large plaza and gardens outside also draw people simply walking or exercising.
Getting there
The hall has its own MRT station (Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall Station, Blue Line), making it a short and direct ride from central Taipei — typically well under 20 minutes from stations like Taipei Main Station.
How much time to allow
Budget around 1 to 1.5 hours if you want to see the main exhibition halls and walk part of the grounds. Add extra time if there's a temporary exhibition or a performance scheduled at the auditorium.
When to go
Early morning or late afternoon tends to be quieter, especially on the plaza, which is popular with joggers and locals doing tai chi. If a changing-of-the-guard ceremony is happening at the entrance, expect a crowd to gather around that time. Weekends and days with special exhibitions can bring larger crowds than weekdays.
Combining with nearby sights
- Farglory Financial Center (0.4km) and Cathay Landmark (0.7km) are close enough to pass on foot if your route continues toward Xinyi's shopping district.
- The Sky Taipei (0.7km) is also within easy walking distance.
- Taipei 101 (0.9km) is a natural next stop, roughly a 10-15 minute walk away, and pairs well with a visit here as part of a half-day loop through Xinyi District.
