Tokyo Tower
What it is
Tokyo Tower is a 332.9-meter lattice communications tower in Shiba-koen, Minato, modeled on the Eiffel Tower and finished in 1958. It held the record as Japan's tallest structure until Tokyo Skytree opened in 2012. Most visitors come for the two observation levels, which give an open view over central Tokyo, including Tokyo Bay on clear days. The orange-and-white paint job is required by aviation safety rules, not styling, and it makes the tower a recognizable landmark from street level throughout the surrounding neighborhoods.
Getting there
The tower sits in Shiba-koen, a short walk from several subway stations near Minato's business and government district. From central Tokyo (Shinjuku, Shibuya, or Tokyo Station), expect around 20-30 minutes by train plus a 5-10 minute walk from the nearest station. It's not directly served by a train line to its base, so some walking is unavoidable.
How long to stay
Allow 1 to 1.5 hours for the observation decks, including waiting for elevators. Add extra time if you plan to browse the shops or food areas at the base of the tower.
When to go
Weekends and holiday afternoons draw the biggest crowds, especially around elevator queues. Weekday mornings or early evenings tend to be calmer. For views, clear winter days generally offer the longest visibility, while a visit around sunset lets you see the city in both daylight and lit up at night.
What to combine it with
- Roppongi (1.4km) – dining, nightlife, and museums, an easy walk or short taxi ride away.
- Shiodome (1.4km) – office towers and waterfront paths, good for a stroll afterward.
- Hamarikyu Gardens (1.5km) – a traditional garden offering a quieter contrast to the tower.
- Midtown Tower (1.5km) – shopping and dining within the Tokyo Midtown complex.
