Fondaco dei Turchi
Der Fontego dei Turchi ist ein Palast in Venedig, der bis etwa 1225 zurückreicht. Er befindet sich am Canal Grande im Sestiere Santa Croce, gegenüber der Kirche San Marcuola und in unmittelbarer Nachbarschaft zum Hirsespeicher aus dem 15. Jahrhundert. Die Adresse lautet Santa Croce 1730. Er diente einige Zeit als Handelshaus für osmanische Händler, die die Venezianer verallgemeinernd als „Türken“ bezeichneten. Heute ist er in städtischem Besitz und beherbergt das Museo civico di storia naturale di Venezia, das naturhistorische Museum der Stadt Venedig.

This is a grand Venetian palazzo on the Grand Canal, restored in the 19th century and now home to the Museo di Storia Naturale di Venezia (the Venice Natural History Museum). Visitors come mainly for the building itself — its long colonnaded facade and courtyard are a good example of Veneto-Byzantine palace architecture — as well as for the museum's collections, which include a large dinosaur skeleton and material on the Venetian lagoon's ecosystem. It's a worthwhile stop if you're interested in either Venetian architecture or natural history, rather than a typical art-museum visit.
Getting there
From St. Mark's Square, take a vaporetto (waterbus) along the Grand Canal to the San Stae stop, a ride of roughly 20-25 minutes depending on the line and stops. On foot from Rialto, it's about a 15-20 minute walk through Santa Croce. If arriving from Marco Polo Airport (VCE), the Alilaguna waterbus or a water taxi to San Stae or a nearby stop is the most direct option.
Time to allow
Plan for around 1 to 1.5 hours to see the museum's main galleries and the building's interior at a comfortable pace.
When to go
It draws far fewer crowds than the major art museums near St. Mark's, so queues are rarely an issue. Mornings on weekdays tend to be quietest. Because much of the museum is indoors, it also works well as a rainy-day option.

- Ca' Vendramin Calergi (0.1km) - directly nearby, an easy add-on along the same stretch of the Grand Canal.
- Ca' Pesaro (0.2km) - a short walk away, housing modern art and Asian art collections.
- Venetian Ghetto (0.4km) - within easy walking distance, worth pairing for a Cannaregio-focused afternoon.
- Cannaregio (0.5km) - the surrounding sestiere, good for continuing on foot after the museum.
