What it is
The Frari is a large Gothic brick church in the San Polo district, built by Franciscan friars from the 14th to 15th centuries. Its main draw is the art inside: Titian's altarpiece "Assumption of the Virgin" over the high altar, his "Pesaro Madonna" along the nave, Giovanni Bellini's triptych in the sacristy, and Donatello's wooden statue of St. John the Baptist. There are also significant funerary monuments, including tombs of Titian and the sculptor Canova. It's a working church rather than a museum, so the interior is dim and the atmosphere is quieter than at more famous Venetian sights.
Getting there
From central Venice (Piazza San Marco or the Rialto), it's roughly a 15-20 minute walk through the San Polo streets. There's no direct vaporetto stop at the church itself; the closest water bus stops are San Tomà or San Stae, each a short walk away. As with most of Venice, expect some backtracking through narrow calli — following signs toward "San Tomà" or "Frari" helps.
Time to allow
Most visitors spend 45 minutes to an hour inside, longer if you want to study the artworks in detail or read the informational panels.
When to go
Mornings tend to be calmer than afternoons, when tour groups pass through. As an active parish church, it can be busier around services, and quiet contemplation is expected throughout. Modest dress (shoulders and knees covered) is customary for entry.
Combine it with
The church sits close to several sights worth pairing with a visit: Ca' Rezzonico (0.4km), a palace-museum on the Grand Canal, and a cluster around 0.6km away — the Ponte della Costituzione, Ca' Pesaro, and the Fondaco dei Turchi. These are all walkable in sequence, making San Polo and the nearby Grand Canal stretch a reasonable half-day route.
