Die Brücke Ponte dell’Accademia in Venedig überspannt den Canal Grande und verbindet die Einzelinseln Santo Stefano und Accademia, den Campo S. Vidal mit dem Campo della Carità, die Contrade S. Vidal und S. Trovaso, sowie die Sestieri San Marco mit Dorsoduro. Ihren Namen verdankt sie den Gallerie dell’Accademia, der am Campo della Carità liegenden, bedeutendsten Gemäldesammlung Venedigs.
What it is
The Ponte dell'Accademia is a wooden pedestrian bridge over the Grand Canal, one of only four crossings along its entire length. It connects the Dorsoduro district to San Marco and takes its name from the Accademia di Belle Arti, once housed nearby. Most visitors come for the view: standing at the crest of the bridge gives an open sightline down the Grand Canal toward the domes of Santa Maria della Salute, one of the better vantage points in the city for photos, especially since the canal is otherwise hard to see in long stretches.
Getting there
The bridge sits close to the city centre, within easy walking distance of Piazza San Marco (about 15-20 minutes on foot through the calli). The Accademia vaporetto stop is right at its foot on the Dorsoduro side, served by lines running the length of the Grand Canal, so it's a natural stop if you're already touring by water.
How long to spend
Crossing and taking in the view takes only a few minutes, but allow 15-20 minutes if you want to pause partway across for photos without rushing, as the bridge is narrow and shared with steady foot traffic.
When to go
The bridge gets crowded around sunset, when people gather to watch the light on the canal, and during midday in high season when it becomes a bottleneck between Dorsoduro and San Marco. An early morning crossing is quieter and gives a clearer view for photos.
Combine it with
The Gallerie dell'Accademia (0.1km) and the Peggy Guggenheim Collection (0.2km) are both a short walk away on the Dorsoduro side, making this bridge a natural link between the two if you're museum-hopping. Ca' Rezzonico (0.5km) and Teatro La Fenice (0.4km) are also close enough to fold into the same stretch of walking.
