Giudecca
Die Giudecca ist eine langgezogene Inselgruppe im Süden der Stadt Venedig in Italien, mit einer Fläche von 58,9 Hektar und einer Bevölkerung von 6.429 zum Stand der Volkszählung 2001. Sie ist ein Teil des Stadtsechstels Dorsoduro.
What it is
Giudecca is a long, narrow island in the Venetian Lagoon, separated from the main body of Venice by the Giudecca Canal. Historically home to shipyards, gardens, and working-class housing, it's quieter and more residential than central Venice, with none of the souvenir-shop density of San Marco. Travellers go for the calmer streets, canal views back toward Dorsoduro, and a sense of everyday Venetian life alongside a few notable churches and former industrial buildings now used as galleries or hotels.
Getting there
From the city centre, the vaporetto (waterbus) is the practical option — lines running along the Giudecca Canal connect it to Zattere and San Marco in about 5-10 minutes. There's no bridge to the main islands, so you'll need to take a boat either way.
Time to allow
A couple of hours is enough for a walk along the fondamenta and a look at Il Redentore. Add more time if you plan to stop for a meal or explore side streets away from the waterfront.
When to go
Giudecca stays noticeably less crowded than central Venice even in peak season, making it a reasonable place to escape the crowds. Late afternoon light along the canal is worth timing a walk around.
