Rialto
Rialto is the market and commercial district on the San Polo side of the Grand Canal, and it has served that function for centuries. Visitors come here for the produce, fish, and vegetable markets, the maze of shopping lanes, and the general street life around the canal, rather than for a single sight. It's a place to walk through and browse rather than to tour.
Getting there
From central Venice (e.g. Piazza San Marco), Rialto is reachable on foot in about 15-20 minutes through the connecting streets, or by vaporetto (water bus) along the Grand Canal, which takes roughly 10-15 minutes depending on the stop. There is no road traffic in this part of the city, so all approaches are on foot or by boat.
Time to allow
An hour is enough for a walk through the market stalls and surrounding lanes. If you want to browse shops, stop for food, or linger by the canal, allow two hours or more.
When to go
The fish and produce market operates in the morning, so come before midday if you want to see it active; by afternoon many stalls close. The area around the Rialto Bridge gets crowded through the day, especially in high season, so early morning is the quietest time to walk through.
