Le Mayeur Museum

Le Mayeur Museum

The Le Mayeur Museum is a museum containing Adrien-Jean Le Mayeur's work as well as his collection of traditional Balinese art and local artifacts. It is located on the seafront at Sanur, Bali, Indonesia.

Adrien-Jean Le Mayeur's House and Collection

This is the former home and studio of Belgian painter Adrien-Jean Le Mayeur, who settled in Sanur in the 1930s and married the Balinese dancer Ni Pollok, who often appears in his work. The house itself, with its carved wooden doors and traditional compound layout, is as much a reason to visit as the paintings inside. The collection includes his own canvases depicting Balinese daily life and dance, along with furniture, textiles, and artifacts he collected during his time on the island.

Getting there

The museum sits directly on Sanur Beach, a short walk or taxi ride from most hotels in the Sanur area. From central Denpasar, it's roughly a 20-30 minute drive depending on traffic. If arriving from Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS), expect around 30-40 minutes by car.

Time to allow

The museum is compact - a single-story house with a handful of rooms - so an hour is usually enough to see the paintings and collection at a relaxed pace.

When to go

Mornings tend to be quieter and cooler for walking around, and natural light in the rooms is better earlier in the day. It's not a high-traffic attraction compared to other Bali sites, so crowding is rarely an issue.

Combine with

  • Sanur Beach (1km) - right next door, easy to pair with a beach walk before or after.
  • Ayung River (2.7km) - a longer stop if you want a change of scenery inland.
  • Bajra Sandhi Monument (3.3km) - a different kind of cultural stop, worth combining if heading toward Denpasar.
  • Holy Spirit Cathedral (3.7km) - can be added to the same loop if exploring beyond Sanur.
