Pura Dalem Sakenan
Pura Dalem Sakenan is a pura located at the north-western shore of Serangan, a small island about 10 kilometres south of Denpasar, Bali. Pura Dalem Sakenan is dedicated to [rambut sedhana] and is associated with prosperity. Pura Dalem Sakenan is the focus temple of the 210-day Piodalan festival where in the past processions of pilgrims visited the island on foot or by traditional colorful wooden boats called jukung. With the construction of the bridge connecting the Serangan island with Bali as well as the reclamation of the island, the use of colorful jukung for pilgrimage has died out.
What it is
Pura Dalem Sakenan sits on the north-western shore of Serangan, a small island off Bali's south coast. It's a "dalem" temple, the type of Balinese temple dedicated to the forces of death and the underworld, and here the dedication is tied to rambut sedhana, associated with prosperity. Most travellers visit for the atmosphere of an active island temple rather than for a single standout structure — carved stone gateways, shrines, and courtyards typical of Balinese temple architecture, usually quiet outside festival periods.
Getting there
Serangan is connected to the Bali mainland by a bridge, so the temple is reached by car or scooter rather than by boat. From central Denpasar the drive takes roughly 20–30 minutes depending on traffic; from the airport it's a similar distance, generally under 30 minutes.
Time to allow
A visit itself is brief — allow 30–45 minutes to walk through the temple grounds and take in the setting. Add extra time if you plan to combine it with other stops on or near the island.
When to go
The temple is the focus of the 210-day Piodalan festival, when it draws large numbers of pilgrims and is at its most crowded and ceremonially active. Outside that period, it's usually calm. As with other Balinese temples, mornings tend to be quieter and cooler for walking around.
Combine with
- Satya Dharma Temple (1.7km) – another temple on or near Serangan, easy to pair with a short visit.
- Benoa Bay (4.5km) – a short drive away, useful if you're heading toward Bali's watersports and boat-tour area.
- Holy Spirit Cathedral (5.7km) and Bajra Sandhi Monument (6km) – both further out toward Denpasar, worth combining if you're spending a full day exploring the wider area rather than just Serangan.
